Warning System Operation

The "ANTILOCK" indicator in the instrument panel cluster (IPC) will illuminate to warn the driver of conditions in the antilock brake system (ABS) or traction control system (TCS) which may result in turning off one or both of these systems. If only the "ANTILOCK" indicator is on, normal braking with full power assist is available. If the "BRAKE" and "ANTILOCK" indicators are on, a problem may exist in the hydraulic brake system. Refer to General Brakes Diagnosis. The EBTCM only controls the "ANTILOCK" indicator when a TCS Diagnostic Trouble Code TO72, "SERIAL DATA-LINK FAULT" is current. The IPC controls the light in all other instances. Conditions for the "ANTILOCK" indicator to turn on are as follows:
1. ABS/TCS Malfunction Detected - ABS/TCS Diagnostic Trouble Code(s). As previously described, the "ANTILOCK" indicator turns on when a problem has been found in the Antilock Brake System and/or a Diagnostic Trouble Code(s) set (except Codes TO67 and TO73). The light indicates that ABS and TCS have been disabled but power assisted braking is still available.
2. ABS/TCS Diagnostic Mode with Scan Tool During diagnostic troubleshooting it may be necessary to plug in the Scan Tool to perform code readout and ABS/TCS functional testing. When the Scan Tool is plugged into the ALDL connector, the "ANTILOCK" indicator will be on. ABS and TCS are disabled when performing diagnostic routines with the Scan Tool. The ABS and TCS will remain disabled ("ANTILOCK" indicator on) when the Scan Tool is removed from the ALDL connector. It is necessary to cycle the ignition off to resume normal ABS/TCS operation.
3. Instrument Panel Bulb Check - When the ignition is fumed to RUN, the "ANTILOCK" indicator will turn on for approximately four seconds and then turn off. The light should turn off with the ignition switch in the RUN position.
4. The "ANTILOCK" indicator will also turn on whenever power to the ABS System is removed, receiving it's ground through the valve relay. Illumination of the "BRAKE" warning light may indicate reduced braking ability. Illumination of the "ANTILOCK" light without the "BRAKE" warning light on indicates that antilock braking is no longer available. Power assisted braking without antilock control is still available.
