Air Bag Warning Lamp
The AIR BAG warning lamp is in the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). The inflatable restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) communicates with the IPC using serial data communication. The SDM commands the IPC to turn the warning lamp ON and OFF through serial data communication. The AIR BAG warning lamp is used in the SIR system to do the following:
^ Verify the lamp operation by flashing seven times when the ignition switch is First turned to RUN.
^ Verify that the SDM is communicating with the IPC through serial data communication and that no SIR DTCs or side air bag (if equipped) DTCs are present by turning OFF after flashing seven times.
^ Warn the vehicle driver of SIR and side air bag electrical system malfunctions which could potentially affect the operation of the SIR and side air bag systems. These malfunctions could result in non-deployment in case of a frontal crash or a side impact. These malfunctions could also result in a deployment for conditions less severe than intended. If the SDM detects a SIR or side air bag (if equipped) malfunction, the AIR BAG warning lamp will flash seven times when the ignition switch is first turned to RUN and then come ON steady.
The AIR BAG warning lamp is the key to driver notification of SIR and Side Air Bag system malfunctions. For proper lamp operation, refer to the SIR Diagnostic System Check.
The AIR BAG warning lamp is two light emitting diodes. The LEDs are not serviceable. Contact an authorized Delco service center.
